Crafted in Clay: Handbuilding Pottery – Sgraffito with Joanna Dawidowska

Join our hands-on sgraffito decorating workshop teaches participants how to carve bold designs into coloured slip on the surface of clay bowls and plates. It’s a satisfying, visually striking technique that works beautifully for both beginners and more experienced makers.
Joanna will behind by explaining the sgraffito process: applying coloured slip to leather‑hard clay and carving through it to reveal the contrasting clay beneath. Examples or samples will be shown to inspire ideas.
Participants will use with pre‑made leather‑hard bowls or plates. A layer of coloured slip or underglaze is applied evenly to create a smooth surface for carving. But making of own plates is also possible at the start of the session.
Workshops emphasise personal expression and simple, achievable motifs.
These workshops are calm, creative and detailed. Participants can work quietly in focus or chat as they carve. The method suits people who enjoy drawing, pattern‑making or slow, mindful craft.
Pieces are left to dry, then bisque‑fired. A transparent glaze is often added later to seal and enhance the contrast, followed by a second firing. Pieces will be ready for collection after 4 weeks.
